Adéline Nowlan, 99, of Moncton, passed away peacefully on February 28th, 2018 at the Villa du Repos with her son, Yvon by her side. She was married to the late Gerald Nowlan.
Born in Bon-Secours NB; she was the daughter of the late Paul and the late Elizabeth (Jaillet) Geneau.
Her family included 4 girls: Aurélie, Hélène, Béatrice and 5 boys: Irénée, Charles, Henri, Aldéric and Archie. Her long marriage of 56 years to Gerald gave two boys: Louis (Denise) and Yvon and one girl, Patricia Jewell. She will be sadly missed by her friends, relatives, nephew, nieces and great granddaughters Jessica and Marissa.
From a very young age she was a very determined and hardworking young lady. Just 12 years old and still in school, she was asked to go take care of another family in Coal Branch. Around 13-14 years old she moved to Moncton to go work in restaurants, her final working years was at the Beaver and Beauséjour Curling Club.
Always very active and outgoing. Up until she was 95 she worked a small garden (2500 square feet). Her basement and freezer had all her preserves neatly organized.
Besides raising her family and working, she attended the Roman Catholic Parish of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, where she helped serve communion and volunteered. She also enjoyed playing cards, bowling and interacting with others.
She would make her own bread as she could never get used to store bought bread. Initially with her Singer treadle sewing machine she would make the clothes for her family. Pants with holes in them was not acceptable! A great cook, earlier on the kitchen wood stove served both as a source of heat and for cooking year round. There was always more food than could be eaten, the remainder being served as leftover, a meal fit for royalty. No one complained especially the dog. After her husband passed away she bought a Shih Tzu, Chico, a wonderful bundle and blessing in disguise, worth more than his weight in gold. For the winter months Chico had three handmade coats to keep him warm. Every day she would bring her dog for a walk and every night this little dog had the best place to sleep, next to her in her bed. Chico had a wonderful long life of almost 16 years.
Besides also making all her blankets, knitting many warm sweaters and socks she did many large needle point pictures.
Many new born babies received a gift from her in the form of a warm knitted hat for their small head.
Always outgoing and extremely helpful, friends visiting her garden would be given a bag of tomatoes.
Many from her generation began to work much earlier than today. Although her formal schooling was cut short her accomplishments were impressive. A great loving mother and a wonderful role model.
Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, (857-1901) on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm and also on Monday from 1 pm until time of departure.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix Roman Catholic Church, Moncton, on Monday, March 3rd, 2018 at 3:30 pm.
