Mississauga, ON / Bouctouche, NB– It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Bernice Bastarache, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who passed away on August 25, 2025.
Born in Bouctouche, N.-B., Bernice was the daughter of the late James Carroll and the late Sophie (Nowlan) Carroll. She was the cherished wife of Gérard Bastarache of Mississauga, ON.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Gérard; her children, Andrew Bastarache of Toronto, ON, and Ann (Gary) Irving of Etobicoke, ON; her two adored grandchildren, Stella and Finnley (Irving); her sisters, Joanne Cormier (late Henri) of Bouctouche and Phyllis (Guy) LeBlanc of Bouctouche Bay; her brother-in-law Herb Després (late Pauline) of Bouctouche; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Bernice and Gérard cherished spending their summers at their cottage in Bouctouche Bay, surrounded by family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her brothers: Cecil, Joseph, Kenneth, and Ralph; and her sisters: Pauline Després, Mary Gautreau, Helen Armstrong, and Muriel Brison.
Visitation will be held at the Passage-Maillet Funeral Cooperative, 29 rue de l’Église, Bouctouche, N.-B., on Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. only. There will be no funeral service at this time.

I’ve had the pleasure and privilege to live next to Bernice and Gerard for the last 10 years. Bernice’s warm welcoming presence and demeanour will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gerard, Ann and Andrew. Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences.

I first met Bernice when I was a teenager. I had just started dating her daughter and wanted to leave a good first impression. I hope I did. My first impression of her was of a kind but no-nonsense person. I wouldn’t have had the words then but now I probably would’ve called her stoic. That said, she always up for a good yarn and a laugh. Bernice was definitely an Irish east-coaster through and through. This, I would discover, meant many things! It meant colourful, somesometimes amusing, sometimes fantastical stories including, if I recall correctly, about fairies. It also meant that she had a deep sense of pride for her heritage. I recall her stories about growing up in Bouctouche in the forties and making the best of life despite the challenges of the time. She told stories about family, about K.C. Irving (before he created the Irving empire), and though she was Irish-Canadian, she told stories about the rich Acadian culture that was such a big part of her beloved New Brunswick. Having spent so much time at her house, I learned much from Bernice including the importance of common sense and saying what needs to be said. She was a wonderful person and although I hadn’t seen her in years, I will miss her dearly. Anne, Andrew, Jerry, Finnley, Stella, and Garry, my heart goes out to you. You’ve lost a matriarch but you’ve gained a guardian angel.
