Bertin Goguen, formerly of Bouctouche, passed away at The Briarlea on Gorge on Sunday, September 14, at the age of 81.
At a young age, Bertin began packing bags at the Irving Shopping Centre in Bouctouche, where he eventually rose to the position of general manager. A well-respected and dedicated employee, he later became lessee of Irving Convenience. His entrepreneurial spirit—and love of a clean vehicle—led him to build the Décroteur Car Wash.
Bertin gave back to his community as a member of the Rotary Club of Bouctouche and the Bouctouche Lions Club, and by delivering Meals on Wheels. He was a founding board member of Le Pays de la Sagouine and part of the visionary team that brought the literary work of Acadian author Antonine Maillet to life on a small, grassy islet in the Buctouche River.
Family was everything to Bertin, and he was proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. In addition to working hard, Bertin and Rose-Mai were fortunate to travel to sunny destinations in the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal. Their favourite trips were those taken with family, and one of the most special was bringing their children and grandchildren to Florida in 2009.
He was also an avid pool player and animal lover, known for feeding shrimp and lobster to neighbourhood stray cats.
Left to mourn is the love of his life, Rose-Mai (Surette); his daughter Chantal and husband Mark Richard, and their children Josée (Patrick) and Micaël; his son Denis and wife Leah, and their children Olivia and Madeline; his daughter Mireille and husband Bobby Dupuis, their son Jérémie (Monica), and granddaughter Élodie.
He is also survived by his siblings: Antoinette (late Louis), Gerald (Elisabeth), Jean-Guy (Ida), and Jacinthe (Tom); his sisters-in-law: Jacinthe, Bernice (Léonce), Nicole (Lee), and Hectorine (Yvon); as well as his extended family.
Bertin was predeceased by his parents, Gérard and Philomène (Bastarache) Goguen.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Briarlea on Gorge for their compassionate care.
If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Visitation will be held at the Passage-Chartersville Funeral Cooperative (363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, NB, E1A 1G1, 506-857-1901) on Thursday, September 18th, from 2 to 4 pm only, followed by the funeral service in the chapel at 4 pm.

Sincere condolence to Rose-May and family. Had the opportunity to work with Bertin when he had the Convenience store and I can tell you that it was operated professionally and very clean store. Bertin had a knack at doing very good promotions and it showed when he did it. Had the pleasure to go on a Trip to Nashville with him his wife and three other stores that had won contest that Irving had done which required that a store would be well operated, clean, offered superior Customer service etc. I was also a member of the Rotary Club in Bouctouche with Bertin and he was a real good active member and participated in a lot of events, The town of Bouctouche is losing a well-known and good citizen, may he rest in peace. Des très bons amis de mes parents, je sais qu’il y a une grande tristesse aujourd’hui chez nous. Mon père aimait BEAUCOUP Bertin, des amis d’enfance jusqu’à leurs vies d’adultes. Il parlait de lui très souvent avec beaucoup de respect. Je pense très fort à vous tous et je vous envoie beaucoup d’amour et de courage. Prenez-vous soin.

It is with personal sorrow that we learned that Bertin had died. We knew he had been ill for some time. Nonetheless, it was unexpected to us.

In Memory of Bertin, Clara and I will make a donation to the Lukas House Society in Vancouver. This is a small charity established in memory of our grandson who tragically died 8 years ago. The charity is dedicated to providing winter clothing to homeless in downtown Vancouver.
