It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Beverly (Bev) James Mitchell on January 2nd, 2026.

Born to Vernon and Doris on October 22, 1946, Bev was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Bev attended high school at Harrison Trimble, where he was a standout football athlete, both as a player and later as a coach. He was also a lifelong hockey enthusiast who enjoyed both playing and watching the game. Bev had a deep love for the hockey world and took great pleasure in attending games whenever he could.

 Bev was employed for many years with the Federal Government, retiring in 1997.

Bev also enjoyed working at The Esquire Tavern and IOOB, where he made a tremendous number of friends over the years. He especially loved the yearly Toilet Bowl football games with his friends at the Esquire—always filled with laughter and fun. To many, Bev was simply known as “The Best Bartender in Moncton.”

At home, you would most often find Bev down by the river—his most peaceful place—or out in nature with his German Shepherd. Above all, Bev had a deep love for his family.

Bev will be deeply missed by his loving wife Dawn; his children Angela, Jody and Brad; his grandchildren William (Amy), Alice, Gord, and Edwin; and his stepchildren Janice, Nick, and Chris. As well as many nieces, nephews & cousins

He is survived by his brothers and sisters Ralph, Ivene, Dale, Sheila, and Roy. Bev was predeceased by his parents, and his sisters Lois and Jeannie.

  1. Bev was one of the nicest people that I had the pleasure of knowing. He and my husband were good friends over many years. He also had the ability to make me laugh so easily and I will miss him.

  8. Doug Pond, in his tribute, said the world was a better place with Bev in it. I echo that sentiment. Played 3 years of Football at HTHS and still remember his ‘classical’ remarks in the huddle before or after a play. Knew Bev from his Government Service days to our occupying a Box Seat at the OLD MONCTON STADIUM with Bev “chirping” an opposition hockey player. His variety of “chirps”, would, today, be a Stand Up Comedy Act.
    Bev was conscientious in every respect and news of his death shook all of us who knew him well! RIP dear friend.

  20. mitchell family grew up next door to us and we became friends. bev was always a great guy and always teased eveyone ,everyone loved him. I haven’t seen bev in years but Dale has kept me updated on how he was still an amazing man. our condolenses and prayers go out to the family.

I have known Bev since the mid 70’s both as a co worker with the federal government and a bar patron as a member on the Esquire Tavern Dirty Thirties ball team .The trait that stood out to me from observing Bev all those years was how well he showed respect for people of all classes treating every individual with equal dignity. He was a class act and a precious friend.

He once wrote on a piece of paper “Tee-key-la” (I had a hard time saying it) & was nervous doing a bar tending job at another bar.     We had a great meeting 3 weeks ago at a Senior Hockey game where else.

  67. OLD friends from the west end Acadia rec hall days floor hockey ,Golden mile,Esquire ,Toilet Bowl and many other good days and nights .Very sad to see him pass.

  68. My earliest memory of Bev was when he was the lifeguard at the Peter Pan pool. My next was him coming home with my brother Bob. My last memory was telling him my brother had Cancer and he would not receive any more treatments. We cried together at Sobeys.

  69. Dawn & Family: I met Bev when I was dating my late husband Bob. Even back then, Bev was a fun-loving man who truly cared about his friends. Bob and Bev shared a lasting friendship throughout the years and never lost touch. When Bob became ill, Bev called frequently, and those conversations meant a great deal to Bob. They always managed to share a few laughs.
    It is very hard to say goodbye to the ones we love. My heart goes out to you & your family.
