Claude Edmond Dumaine, 91, of Dieppe, passed away peacefully at the Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre on

Tuesday, April 14, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born and raised on a family farm in Île-des-Chênes, Manitoba, he was the son of the late Raoul and Yvonne (Dumont) Dumaine.

Claude is survived by his loving wife, Paula Comeau; his children, Gilles (Annette), Paul, Patricia Horsman (Lloyd), Gina (Mario Comeau), and Josée Mailloux; his grandchildren, Marc (Sophie), Jessica, Matt (Leanne), Patrick (Stephanie), Miguel (Monica), Isabelle, and Rane (Sim); his six great-grandsons, Olivier, Wes, Dustin, Atlas, Félix, and Liam; and his brother, Fernand (Hélène).

He was predeceased by his brothers, Léo and Pierre, and his sisters, Germaine and Stella.

After completing high school, Claude pursued his studies at St. Boniface College, where he earned a master’s degree in social work. He began his career in social services in Manitoba before joining the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), where he worked in Manitoba, Québec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

Claude served for many years as warden of both Dorchester Penitentiary and Springhill Institution. He was part of a select group of leaders instrumental in shifting CSC from a primarily industrial model to one rooted in rehabilitation and a clear institutional mission. Under his leadership, Dorchester evolved from a maximum-security facility into a multi-level institution.

He played a key role in establishing a Regional Treatment Centre to address the mental health needs of inmates and helped lead the early integration of female correctional officers into what had traditionally been an all-male environment. A strong advocate for professionalism and accountability, Claude contributed to the advancement of standards that culminated in the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (CCRA) of 1992, reinforcing the rule of law within correctional institutions.

He was a featured speaker at workshops focused on “Consolidating the Mission Document,” helping fellow leaders balance public safety with meaningful rehabilitation and reintegration. He also championed community-based initiatives, encouraging programs where inmates contributed to local projects, fostering understanding and demonstrating the potential for positive change.

Claude’s contributions were recognized with the Corrections Exemplary Service Medal in 1988, and in 1991 he received a Government of Canada award for directing the most humanitarian penitentiary in the country. He also played a key role as the designated architect in the construction of the penitentiary in Renous, New Brunswick.

He retired in 1997 while serving as Special Advisor to the Deputy Commissioner for the Atlantic Region.

Outside of his professional life, Claude was a skilled woodworker who took great pride in building furniture and tackling projects around the home.

Claude was an avid reader with a keen interest in current events, politics, and the stock market. In retirement, he found joy in the outdoors—tending meticulously to his yard, preparing compost, and maintaining his lawn. He also enjoyed his daily walks with his dog.

Claude was known for his sharp mind and natural ability in negotiation, often managing to find a good deal. Above all, he cherished time spent with his wife and family and was always ready to linger at the dinner table, sharing stories and conversation for hours.

Claude, Papa, Pépère—you will be deeply missed. We will forever remember your strength, compassion, wisdom, and sense of humour.

Visitation will take place at Passage Chartersville Dieppe on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 9am to 11am followed by a Chapel Service at 11am. A reception will follow at Passage Chartersville Dieppe.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
