Donald Bastarache
Feb. 18th, 1937 – June 9th, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Donald (Don) Bastarache on Monday, June 9, 2025. He was surrounded by loved ones until the end. Don was born February 18, 1937, in St Joseph-de-Kent, NB. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years Melina and his four sons, Roger (Anne) of Moncton, Victor (Lisa) of Moncton, Bobby of Albuquerque, NM, Charles (Candice) of Summerville, SC and his adoring grandchildren, Vanessa, Anika, Jean-Luc (Renée), Sophie, Jocelyn, Sasha, Olivia and his many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear sister Irma (feu Joseph Leblanc) St Joseph-de-Kent and Joseph (feu Helen) of Milford NH. He was predeceased by his parents Ovila and Sarah (Cassie), sisters Angela (Alcide Allain), Maria “Azelia” (Joseph Richard), brothers Herve and Edouard (Jeannette) of St Edouard-de-Kent.
Don moved to Ontario at a young age to work on farms and road building. He put those earned wages toward studies in the trades of metal fabrication and welding. He eventually made his way to Toronto where fortunately he met Melina. They married in Bouctouche and then soon moved to Gardner, Mass. There they had four handsome boys. In 1975, our family returned to St. Joseph where we built our home and his garage, both of which he enjoyed until he could no longer. He took pleasure in his work as a welder at McSheffery Industries until his retirement in 1999. After that, “for the heck of it” Don continued to build, fix, invent and create. He was always helping friends and family with projects. Don was an avid gardener, hunter, outdoorsman and storyteller. He shared his harvest freely. He relished his time at the camp that he constructed deep in the woods of Harcourt. From there he tapped his maple trees in the spring and in the fall, he would set off for moose expeditions with us boys and his old hunting buddies. He enjoyed a sip of beer or scotch, Country and Western Music and he even hosted a few fun house parties in his time. He will be remembered as a man of honor, decency and steady friendship. He was ever faithful and loyal to our mother. He was always ready with a joke and often had a twinkle of mischief in his eyes. He will never be forgotten and will always be present in our hearts.

Visitation will be held from Passage Funeral Cooperative, 29 rue de l’eglise, Bouctouche, 506-743-2207, on Monday, June 16th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm only. Funeral mass will be held from Saint-Jean-Baptiste Roman Catholic Church, Bouctouche, on Tuesday, June 17th, at 11 am.

May Don rest in peace. My deepest condolences to the family at this time. Chuck (our son-in-law) invited my husband Bill and I to Canada. Don along with Melina made us feel so welcome along with his other two Sons and their family. Thank you Don for being kind we appreciated your thoughtfulness. Your Spirit will never be forgotten.

Our deepest sympathies. We met Don a few years ago. He usually dropped in at our camp in St-Joseph. We only knew him as the friendly guy with the red jeep. He would spend hours telling us stories about the lands and his boys. He will be missed.

SORRY TO THE FAMILY BASTARACHE R THE PASSING OF DONEL/WE WERE IN TORONTO WITH A BUNCH OF GOOD GUYS IN 1958 TO 1962 WITH THEM ALL AS BOARDERS AND COULDN ASK FOR A BETTER BUNCH OF BOYS.TO ALL THE FAMILY HE AND MELINA WERE THE BEST .LOVE YOU ALL .RIP DONEL.

My sincere condolences to all of Don’s family. I only met Don last year as his new neighbour in St. Joseph and I immediately knew I had a friend in him. His departure was too soon. I was looking forward to sitting down with him for a drink and hearing all of his interesting stories about the area. Rest in peace my neighbour.
