It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doris Gallant, on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the Villa du Repos, at the age of 96.
Born in Cap-Lumière, she was the daughter of the late Dorina Maillet (née King) and the late Richard Maillet.
She is survived by her three children, Maurice (Denise Melanson), Nicole (Marc Paulin), and Jocelyne (Théo Popma); two sisters and one brother, Nélida (Richard Butland), Léandre (Jocelyne Mallette), and Marie-Reine Maillet; as well as three grandchildren, Sage Gallant-Cyr (Vera Georgouli), Ovila Gallant-Cyr (Marie Sonderegger), and Félix Popma. She was predeceased by her husband Ovila, her brother Clovis, and her half-sister Thérèse Maillet.
She had a long career as an elementary school teacher, children’s education and helping them learn to read were her greatest passions. In retirement, she devoted herself enthusiastically to genealogy, Acadian history, and Bridge. Throughout her life, whatever she set her mind to, she approached with enthusiasm and determination. She loved life deeply and seized every opportunity for new experiences. She had a big heart, she was loving and generous toward all those around her – family, friends, and caregivers.
The family wishes to thank her home caregivers, who looked after her with great love and kindness for many years, as well as the attentive staff of the Villa du Repos.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Passage Funeral Cooperative, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Passage Funeral Chapel. After the ceremony, family and friends are invited to join the family for a light lunch.
In memory of Doris, those who wish may make a donation to Lire et faire lire Acadie, Moncton Headstart Inc. or a charity of their choice.

I want to extend my sympathy to Doris’s family. I taught with Doris and Marg as the immersion teachers. Heather and I were the English teachers. We enjoyed our years at CDT as first grade teachers.. She will be missed I’m sure.
My dear sympathies to family for she was what was called beginners class at Big Cove NB. She lived here on our reserve with her husband Ovila who was the principle. They were so loved by all & was we were all sad when they left. Maurice was born while they lived here for sure, thank you Mrs Gallant for being here & teaching us also understanding that English was our second language. I was one of the many teachers who taught with Doris and we were all so fortunate to have learned from her what a truly great teacher could be!!

My sympathies to her family. I was her neighbor for 27 years. She will be missed. I never got to teach with her, but wished I could have. She was so positive and well liked. Very grateful to have been her neighbor. Rip Doris.
