Dr. Rafael Candela

Moncton, NB – Dr. Rafael Candela passed away peacefully at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, Moncton, on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014.

Born in Madrid, Spain, he was the son of the late Jaime and the late Dolores (nee Manzaneque) Candela.

Following his medical career in his native Spain and as a professor in Africa, he came to settle in Moncton in 1968 to assume a teaching position in the Biology department at the Université de Moncton until his retirement in 1989.

He will be deeply mourned by his beloved wife Audrey Candela (nee Northrup) of Moncton; his three children, Rafael (Denise Melanson) of Dieppe, Sonsoles Breau of Scoudouc and Begona (Georges Abdulnour) of Trois-Rivières, QC; his twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and by several nieces and nephews.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to two very special friends Francine Savoie and Armand Richard. We would also like to covey our sincere thanks to our numerous neighbors and friends who have accompanied us during these past months. The family would like to send our love and appreciation to the staff on Unit 3E at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre not only for their world class care, but for their compassion, kindness and genuine concern during his final months of his life. The support they provided us goes above and beyond the call of duty and is a testament of their tireless dedication. They have become like a second family during these difficult months.
