The Reverend Father Louis-Marcel Daigle, priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross and member of the Acadian District, died on May 21st at Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur Nursing Home, in Dieppe, N.B. Eldest son of the late Auguste Daigle and Julie Léger, Father Daigle was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on April 14, 1918. After his classical studies at St. Joseph’s University in Memramcook, he entered the Novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal, Québec, on August 15, 1940. He pronounced his final vows on August 16, 1944, and was ordained a priest on September 8, 1944.
From 1945 to 1949, he taught Philosophy at his Alma Mater in Memramcook. During that period, he was also director of a junior seminary at the same location. After a year of studies at Laval University (Licentiate in Philosophy), he came back to Memramcook where he taught and occupied other functions until 1958. For several years, he was Assistant Superior of the Acadian Vice-Province of Holy Cross Priests at first; then he filled the same position when that religious unit became a full-fledged Religious Province in 1958.
He was among the first group of Holy Cross Religious who moved to Moncton in 1953 to open a new university at 80, Church Street. He was Religious Superior of the group from 1960 to 1963. When the new Université de Moncton succeeded to St. Joseph’s University in 1963, he became the first Vice-President with the founder and President, Father Clément Cormier, C.S.C. For several years he will go on with his teaching and serve in different capacities on campus. He was General Secretary of the University from 1975 to 1979. He was greatly appreciated for his well known discretion and his promptness in serving.
After retiring from the Université de Moncton in 1979, he became Pastor at the Parish of Pré-d’en-Haut, and served through the years as an auxiliary priest in different parishes of the Archdiocese of Moncton. In 1987, he retired at the Holy Cross Residence on Kendra Street in Moncton. There he served as a Local Superior for a few years. In 2006, due to health problems and ageing, he was transferred to the Notre-Dame du Sacré-Coeur Nursing Home, in Dieppe.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, François (the late Rita Blaquière) and a sister, Alice. He is survived by a sister, Cécile (the late Désiré Goguen) and a brother Dr. Egbert Daigle (Thérèse Loiseau). Father Louis-Marcel, as generations of students called him, was a man and a priest of great integrity. It can be said of him that he was the friend of students, and a very welcoming priest. In his daily behaviour, he was also a real gentleman, always showing a great deal of respect for his colleagues and for the different employees who worked around him. He thanked and complimented all secretaries and clerks long before there was a day or a week devoted to that purpose. At the Notre-Dame du Sacré-Coeur’s Nursing Home, he was considered the ideal resident: always kind and thoughtful, showing great consideration for nurses and employees. He affectionately called the nurses “My angels”.
Visitation will be held at the Chartersville Funeral Home on Sunday May 24th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Monday May 25th at Assumption Cathedral in Moncton from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m., at which time Funeral will be held with Archbishop André Richard, C.S.C. presiding. Burial will take place later on in the Holy Cross Community Cemetery in Memramcook. May he rest in Peace, he who so faithfully served the Lord, the Church and his fellow human beings!
Est décédé à Moncton (N.-B.) le 21 mai courant le père Louis-Marcel Daigle, prêtre de la Congrégation de Sainte-Croix. Né à Ottawa (Ontario) le 24 avril 1918, il était le fils d’Auguste Daigle et de Julie Léger. Après ses études classiques à l’Université Saint-Joseph de Memramcook, il est entré au noviciat de la Congrégation de Sainte-Croix le 15 août 1940. Il a fait sa profession perpétuelle dans cette congrégation le 16 août 1944 et a été ordonné prêtre le 8 septembre 1944.
De 1945 à 1949, on le trouve professeur de philosophie à son alma mater et directeur de l’école apostolique St-Thomas, à Memramcook. Après une année d’études en philosophie (licence) à l’Université Laval, il revient à Memramcook comme professeur. Il est de la première équipe de religieux qui déménagent à Moncton en 1953. Il est notamment supérieur des religieux au campus de Moncton de 1960 à 1963. Lorsque l’université de Moncton succédera à l’Université Saint-Joseph en 1963, il deviendra le premier vice-recteur du père Clément Cormier, tout en continuant de donner des cours de philosophie. Il est secrétaire général de l’Université de Moncton de 1975 à 1979.
Pendant de nombreuses années il a fait partie du Conseil de la Vice- Province, puis de la Province, acadienne des Pères de Sainte-Croix, notamment à titre de vice-supérieur. Il fut un conseiller prisé pour sa discrétion proverbiale et son esprit de service spontané.
Après avoir pris sa retraite de l’Université de Moncton, il devient curé de Pré-d’en-Haut à compter de 1980 et aussi remplaçant dans diverses paroisses du diocèse de Moncton. Il prendra définitivement sa retraite en 1987 à la résidence Sainte-Croix de Moncton dont il sera le supérieur pendant quelques années. Sa santé déclinant, il se trouvait au Foyer de soins des Sœurs de Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur, avenue Acadie de Dieppe depuis 2006.
Outre ses parents, l’ont précédé dans la tombe son frère François (feue Rita Blaquière) et sa sœur Alice. Lui survivent sa sœur Cécile (feu Désiré Goguen) et son frère le Dr Egbert( Thérèse Loiseau). Le père Louis-Marcel, comme des générations d’étudiants l’ont appelé, était un homme d’une très grande intégrité. On peut dire de lui qu’il était un ami des étudiants et une personne généralement très accueillante. Il a aussi toujours manifesté un grand respect pour les employés des institutions où il a œuvré et il ne leur ménageait pas ses compliments. Au Foyer de Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur, il appelait volontiers les infirmières et le personnel soignant « mes anges ». Il aimait beaucoup ses semblables et les gens appréciaient grandement sa compagnie.
Sa dépouille sera exposée à la maison funéraire de Chartersville le dimanche 24, de 14 à 16 heures et de 19 à 21 heures, puis le lundi 25 de 9 à 11 heures à la cathédrale Notre-Dame de L’Assomption de Moncton. C’est à 11 heures que seront célébrées les funérailles, sous la présidence de S.E. Mgr André Richard, C.S.C., archevêque de Moncton. Les restes du père Daigle seront inhumés plus tard au cimetière de la Congrégation de Sainte-Croix à Memramcook. Que repose en paix ce fidèle et dévoué serviteur du Christ et de son Église!
