For several years, he and his wife Ruth wrote a weekly gardening column for the Times-Transcript, and Gerald enjoyed offering gardening advice on a weekly phone-in programme on CBC radio. His interests were many and wide-ranging, and he took great pleasure in his extensive reading all his life, right up to his final week.
