Shediac, NB – Gertrude May McHugh (Kay) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, June 27, 2026, in her home in Shediac, NB, at the age of 94. Born on April 11, 1932, in Moncton NB, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie Shand (Nancy) Lockhead Kay.
Gertrude was predeceased by her first husband Joseph William Grayney, her second husband Gus McHugh, her sister Edith Dunn (Ken), her brother Daniel Kay (Barbara), her grandsons, Shane Ninham and Taylor Ninham.
She will be greatly missed by her son Frank Grayney (Janet), daughter Michelle Grayney, daughter AnnMarie Peterson (Howard), son Peter Grayney (LaVerne), her nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gertrude worked at the Golden Mile takeout in Moncton and was co-owner. She also worked at the Moncton Hospital for many years before retiring in 1985.
She was baptized in the Worldwide Church of God in 1985 and loved going to the annul Feasts for many years. She also was a member of the Shediac Bay Community (Baptist) Church. She loved her family, her friends, and her helpers.
She loved playing games on her computer till 1am every night. She loved her nightly phone calls with her daughter Michelle. But most importantly, she loved God. She knew that once she fell asleep for the last time, it would only seem like a split second before she awakens again in the resurrection, to meet the Lord in the air.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Kindred Home Care, especially Lowela, who took such good care of her.
A donation in memory of Gertrude can be made to the The Shediac Bay Community Church.
Visitation and funeral will be held at Passage Shediac Bridge 3754 route 134 Shediac Bridge NB on Thursday July 2, 2026. Viewing from 2pm to 4pm, followed by the funeral service at 4pm.
Interment will follow afterwards at the Shediac Bay Community Church Cemetery, 28 Roy Mullins Dr. Shediac NB.
A reception will be held at the Community Room at 30 Roy Mullins Dr. Shediac NB

We miss you so much! I am so thankful the kids and I got to visit you last year, we will always cherish those memories. I’m proud of you for staying independent and healthy in your apartment for so long, with your ladies to come help you. We love you so much Grammy.
I was truly thankful to have been with Gurt when I Linda Morrow sent time sharing family love and pictures of her granddaughters having babies at a close time together. I was her caregiver also for a short time.
She was so thankful to have seen the great-grand babies on photos. How excited she was to have been blessed with them. Gertrude led me to seek out SBCC. She was my inspiration. Thank you Lord for her love of Jesus.
Gertrude was a dear friend and I so loved to visit her. I will miss our visits but cherish the memories. We had lots of laughs together. Gertrude had a beautiful smile and was always so positive. She loved her family and was so proud of them. May you have peace knowing she is with her our Lord.

To Gertrude’s family, we offer our condolences. She was a kind lady and we are forever grateful for her help to my brother many times while a neighbour. May she be reacquainted with her Saviour in heaven.

Your mother was an incredible person, and her memory will live on through the lives she touched. My deepest sympathies. I enjoyed chatting with your mom after services and can still hear her laughter… a wonderful, cheerful, and inspiring woman.
My deepest condolences in the loss of Gertrude. I met her through church but became involved in WMS and she was a member. . Gertrude was a long time member of the Kathleen Soucy ABW. Over the years she carried various positions, recently Treasurer. She never gave up supporting all our missions here at home and abroad. She will be greatly missed. Very sorry to hear about Gertrude’s passing, and our sincere condolences to all of her family. She, and her infectious smile and kind heart, will be greatly missed. Lannette and I wish that we could be there with you, but our thoughts and prayers are.
I remember Gertrude well when she actively attended Shediac Baptist Church on Hannington Road, as well as, in the big white tent next to where the current Shediac Bay Community Church stands (while it was under construction), and at the Shediac Bay Community Church after it opened. She always had a smile on her face, just like the photo of her on the obituary. You could definitely tell that she was a daughter of the King. Her mobility issues are over now; she is running and leaping for joy all over heaven!
What a privilege it was to have met such a wonderful person, very kind and loving at heart with a beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed.
