In Loving Memory Of
Paul Sylvio Menard
1955 ~ 2023

Husband and beloved father Paul Sylvio Menard of Shediac, NB passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

Paul was a two-time cancer survivor who never complained and met his last cancer with as much courage as always.

Born in Sudbury, ON to Sylvio and Thérèse Menard, Paul was a proud Franco Ontarien. He met the love of his life Judith LaBrie in Ottawa.

In 1997 he and Judith and their baby daughter moved to NB and l’Acadie became their forever home. Paul completely embraced his Shediac Community and the community fiercely returned his embrace.

Here are a few of the organizations where you may have met Paul.

He was President of the Shediac Public Library with a great focus on Literacy and Children Reading (2000 to 2015), founder of Centre Accès, a devoted volunteer at both MFB and LJR schools, President of the Shediac Winter Carnaval, Santa Claus in the Shediac Christmas parade, and he held the role of President of the Shediac Lobster Festival. He was a Knight of Columbus, taught catechism, and he could be seen going out in all kinds of weather to deliver food via the Vestiare Saint-Joseph. After his first cancer, he immediately gave back by volunteering at the Georges Dumont Hospital too which he did for several years.

Paul was also involved in the Centre de Resources et Crises Familiale Beauséjour working with NB Government representatives focusing on providing resources to NB Seniors so they could remain in their homes as long as possible.

If you were an MFB student between the years 2000 and 2008 you may have benefitted from his annual end of school year BBQs.

In 2010 he was the recipient of New Brunswick’s Governor General Award for Volunteer Service to his community.

He was known as Papa Paul to many youngsters. He loved to cook and showed his love by feeding people. No one ever left the house hungry.

He will be missed by his daughter Chloe (Austin Despres, Shediac River NB) and his son Pierre (Melanie Landry, Wahnapitae ON), his father-in-law Yvan LaBrie (Terrebonne QC), he was known as “Menoncle Paulo” to several nieces and nephews, and an incomparable life partner of 34 years to Judith LaBrie. Other than the above named, his loss will be felt by his sisters Carmen (Rémi Gagné, Orleans ON) and Julie, his brother Robert, several cousins in law and many friends.

He was predeceased by his sisters Collette Olive and Nicole Gilmore, his parents Sylvio and Thérèse and his mother in law Ann Higgins.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

As a German woman I’m not very good in formal expression, please let me speak simple but friend my heart, which isn’t easy when tears spray out of my eye the same time.
My family and I moved to Shediac 18 years ago, right next door to Paul is Judith Mernard.
It didn’t take long to connect and after a while we became friends. Enjoyed each other’s company at bonfires in our backyard, having lobster fests together, celebrating new years eve, and checked in on each other. Watching our kids grow up together.
When I look out my window and see your house, I feel like Paul has to go in or come out any moment.
Not many neigbours truly become friends.
We honor and cherish the memories of Paul Mernard. He will be in our hearts always. Love and light.

  16. While the years have flown by since we were friends and classmates of Paul’s at Sudbury High School, the friendships, fun memories and our admiration of Paul have remained. Our deepest condolences to your family.

  17. Thoughts and prayers are with you and Chloe as you both find your way through this difficult journey. So many memories to cherish. Stay strong.
