ANNE THERESE MACLEOD (McEachern)
August 20, 1927 – October 3, 2021
Our dear mother, Anne, died peacefully on October 3, 2021 in Moncton, New Brunswick at the age of 94 with her daughters by her side. Anne was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and raised in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia. After finishing high school at Mount St. Bernard, Anne graduated from nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal in 1948. She then continued her education graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Francis Xavier in 1950. She served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1950 to 1952. In 1952 she married Ian Colin MacLeod (1927 – 2009) whom she had met at St. Francis Xavier University. They commenced married life in Sarnia, Ontario where their five children were born. They accepted an overseas assignment to Libya in 1964, followed in 1972 by a transfer to Aruba. Upon retirement in 1982 they made Aruba their home until 2008 when they moved to Calgary, Alberta. Anne moved to Moncton, New Brunswick in 2013.
Anne is survived by her five children: Sandy LeBlanc (Paul), Elizabeth Callaghan (Emmet), Ian (Jo-Anne), David (Donna) all of Calgary, Alberta and Duncan (Cheryl) of Whitehorse, Yukon. Anne leaves 13 grandchildren, Tom (Dani), Dan (Laurie), Michael; Austin, Steven, Veronica (Perry) and Kevin; Meagan (Marc) and Casey; Jordan, Taylor, and Connor; and Elyse (Alex). Anne also leaves six great-grandchildren.
Anne is also survived by her four younger sisters: Stella Farrell of Sydney, NS; Winnie Belliveau of Moncton, NB; Elinor Gromick and Peggy MacDonald (Ricky) of Dartmouth, NS; and her sister-in-law Joan MacLeod of Calgary, AB. Anne was predeceased by her three older brothers Desmond, Hugh, and Walter, three sisters-in-law Mary McEachern, Maxine McEachern and Denise MacLeod and her three brothers-in-law, Aubrey Farrell, Al Belliveau and Bill Gromick and by her parents Elizabeth and Leo B. McEachern.
Anne was smart and organized and she could always see the bright side of life’s adventures. Those were the qualities she drew upon when she had to shepherd five kids around Europe for months after having to evacuate our home on three hours’ notice during the 1967 June war in the Middle East. Anne loved to travel no matter the occasion. Another memorable long travel adventure resulted from the 1969 coup d’etat again while living in Libya.
Anne loved to play bridge, bingo, and crib; she was an excellent golfer, and she played tennis well into her 80’s.
After spending so many years overseas, Anne’s life was enriched upon her return to the Maritimes because she was then able to be in closer contact with all her sisters. The unique care established by Paulette and Chris at ProTem meant that Anne could enjoy the 90th birthday celebration Chris and Paulette hosted for her with so many of her family from across Canada, and then go on to live many comfortable years past that milestone age. We are all especially thankful for Winnie’s Wednesday visits, as well as many visits from her nieces Paulette and Denise, and her grandniece Monica.
We would like to thank the ProTem staff at 71 Gorge Road, Moncton for their kind, compassionate, and professional care over the last years of Anne’s life so that Anne could safely and happily be ‘herself’.
A Funeral Mass will be held in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia at a date to be announced.
