Grand-Barachois, NB – Ferdinand Cormier, 83, passed away peacefully at the Villa Providence in Shediac, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, September 29, 2014.
Born in Cap-Pelé, NB, on February 21, 1931, he was the son of the late Basil and Mélindé (Vautour) Cormier.
Ferdinand met his wife of almost 60 years in 1952 in Dupuis Corner and their childhood friends will remember them hanging out at the old rinks in town and Léontine’s restaurant. They went on to marry in 1954 and had five children. Ferdinand was a very passionate man and amongst his many passions were hockey and fishing. He began getting involved in hockey in the 1960’s when his son was young and he continued to coach to the Junior A level, winning the New Brunswick Junior Champ in 1975 with the Cap-Pelé Pêcheurs. He was a fisherman by trade and he battled the sea from a very young age until he retired, but even after retirement he could not stay away from the wharfs very long. He would often take drives to the wharf and stop and chat with fishermen and friends. Friends and family will remember him always having projects on the go in the workshop and he would never pass up the opportunity to tease or tell a joke to make everyone laugh. He loved children and people in his family have lots of memories of him sitting in his rocking chair on the front step watching the kids play and enjoying every minute of it.
Ferdinand will be sadly missed by his wife of almost 60 years, Doris (Landry) of Dupuis Corner; his children, Yvon of Cap-Pelé, Diane, Joanne (Allain) and Phyllis of Grand-Barachois and Caroline (Jacques) of Moncton; he is also survived by ten grandchildren, eleven great grand-children; his brothers and sisters, Albina (late Amédé), Lorraine (Roméo), Aurel (Eva), Aline (Valerie) and Fernand (Maria); one sister-in-law, Carmelle; also by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Valerie; one sister, Doris (Gérard).
As per Ferdinand`s request, there will be no visitations at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held at the Ste-Thérèse-d’Avila RC Church in Cap-Pelé on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 10:30 am. Reception to follow.
