Gerald “Jude” DeVarennes, 90, of Moncton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, December 23rd 2009 at the Moncton Hospital.
Born November 14th 1919 in Moncton, NB, he was the son of the late Jacques and the late Marie Anne (néee: Aucoin) DeVarennes.
Prior to retirement, Mr. DeVarennes worked as a locomotive engineer (over 44 years) for the CNR. He was an avid sportsman, having played hockey in his earlier years with the Juvenile Rangers and was part of the team in 1937 & 1938, when they were declared NB Champs, he also played softball and his team became the Junior NB Champs in 1939 and the Senior NB Champs in 1940. Mr. DeVarennes also excelled in bowling and horseshoes and had the trophies to prove it. Gerald belonged to many clubs including the Moncton Horseshoe Club, Golden Age Club, Moncton Legion, CNR Pensioners Club, Locomotive Engineers Union, Bi-Centennial Skating Club, Airforce Veterans Club, Christ-Roi bowling league as well as several other bowling clubs and was a member of the Saint Augustine parish.
Gerald was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, he always had a smile on his face and a baseball or hockey story to talk about.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary (née Carney); his children: Ronnie, Caroline and Rosemarie (Robert) Richard, all of Moncton; three grandchildren: Tanya, Joey and Ryan; two great grandchildren: Chad and Jeffrey as well as nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Art and also by one baby sister.
Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, NB, (857-1901), on Monday from 2 to 4 pm.
Funeral mass will be celebrated from Saint-Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, Moncton, NB on Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 at 10: 30 am.
Interment in the Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe, NB.
Donations to the Friends of the Moncton Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
À l’Hôpital de Moncton, le mercredi 23décembre, 2009 entouré de sa famille à l’âge de 90 ans, est décédé paisiblement Gerald “Jude” DeVarennes, domicilié à Moncton, N.-B.
Né le 14 novembre 1919 à Moncton, il était le fils de feu Jacques et de feu Marie Anne (née Aucoin) DeVarennes.
Avant sa retraite, M. DeVarennes avait travaillait pour plus de 44 ans au CNR comme ingénieur de locomotive. Un passionné de sport, il a joué au hockey et faisait parti de l’équipe Juvenile Rangers, qui ont rapporté le championat du N.-B. en 1937 et 1938, il jouait aussi le baseball et faisait parti des équipes qui ont rapporté le championat N.-B. Junior en 1939 et Senior en 1940. M. DeVarennes participait aussi aux jeux de quilles et de fer à cheval et a plusieurs trophées pour le prouver. Il faisait parti de plusieurs club et association tel que le Moncton Horseshoe Club, Club d’Age d’Or, Moncton Legion, CNR Pensioners Club, Locomotive Engineers Union, Bi-Centennial Skating Club, Airforce Veterans Club, Equipe de quilles du Christ-Roi ainsi que plusieur autres équipes.
Père, grand-père et arrière grand-père, Gerald avait toujours un sourire au visage et une anectote de hockey ou baseball a raconté.
Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse de 56 ans, Mary (née Carney); ses enfants: Ronnie, Caroline et Rosemarie (Robert) Richard, tous de Moncton; trois petits-enfants: Tanya, Joey et Ryan; deux arrière petits-enfants: Chad et Jeffrey ainsi que des neveux et nièces.
Outre ses parents, un frère, Art ainsi qu’une jeune soeur l’ont précédé dans la tombe.
Les visites auront lieu à la Maison funéraire Chartersville, 363 rue Amirault, Dieppe, N.-B., (857-1901) le lundi de 14h à 16h.
Les funérailles auront lieu en l’église Saint-Augustin, le mardi 29 décembre, 2009 à 10h 30.
