Born in MacDougall Settlement he was the son of the late Philias and Eugenie Gagnon. He was the last remaining member of the family and was pre-deceased by 7 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
For the last 8 years Joe resided at the Veterans Centre and continued to embrace life attending all activities and always keeping busy drawing and colouring. He continued to amaze his family with his stamina and will to live.
Joe served in the Second World War overseas and returned to Canada with a war bride – Ada Lilly, his wife (predeceased).
Joe was co-founder of the Food Depot Alimentaire and a Director with Canadian Food Bank, and had been a District Deputy with the Knights of Columbus # 1310, and a member of the Canadian Legion #6, the Kiwanis, UCT. He was involved in many organizations and continually gave of his time to help others, particularly those who were less fortunate. He was recognized for his volunteer contributions by the City of Moncton and was presented the Governor General Caring Canadian award in 2005.
Joe will be missed by his two sons David (Doreen) of Moncton, Michael (Pam) of Fredericton; and his four daughters Valerie Hussey (Frank) of Moncton, Carol Ferguson of Moncton, Pam Van Egmond (Martin) of Moncton, Gail Collette (Roger) of Lower Coverdale.
His 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren will remember him always, particularly the fun they had at his camp which he decorated in his own particular style.
Our gratitude and appreciation for all the care given by to the staff of the Veteran’s Centre. He often provided a reason to laugh with his creative come backs.
He was a loving father and unique individual, to all who met him, he will be forever missed by his family.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church 340 Dominion Street, Moncton on Friday, April 8, 2015 at 12:00 pm with Father Laurence Quin-Morris officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion #6, who are fundraising for a new bus for the Veterans at the Centre or the Food Depot Alimentaire would be appreciated by the family.
