Ralph D. Trites passed away peacefully on July 4th, 2020 in his 95th year. Words cannot adequately express the guiding role that Ralphie has played in the lives of his closest family. His loss will be most felt by Janet and Boyd Algee, Drs. Bridget and Mark Algee-Hewitt, and Hannah Algee and her young son Weston. He will also be sadly missed by Robert Vautour (Julie),and his family : son Matthew and granddaughter Samantha.
Born the youngest of 8 children, to George H.S. Trites, CNR claims agent, and Nora Cuthbertson, millner, in Moncton. Ralph enjoyed a charmed childhood growing up in the CNR Row Housing on Albert Street and as part of St. Bernard’s Irish Catholic community. His neighbourhood was defined by St. Bernard’s School, CNR railway tracks, Eaton’s Department Store, and the Empress Theatre, the latter which evoked a life-long love for “old dusters.” Sunday afternoons, with his mother and sisters Frances and Eileen, he took the train to Pointe du Chene for picnics, which Ralphie always said included his favorite- root beer. He also spoke fondly of the times spent at his Aunt Hat’s farm in Salisbury, playing with his dog, Prince, and picking vegetables with his mother and his Aunt Bobo. Ralph was a graduate of Moncton High School, where he was senior class president of 1943, and completed his graduate education at Robinson Business College. His experience during World War II was as a small arms instructor at Camp Utopia. He was a career employee of Trans Canada Airlines/Air Canada with positions in Moncton, Halifax, Sydney NS and retired from the personnel section of flight operations department in Toronto, after 35 years of service. As someone who was devoted to his family, he frequently flew back and forth home – to his mother, sisters, and nieces, and eventually young grand nieces until his retirement, returning to Moncton. As a globetrotter with many travel friends, “R.D.” equally thought nothing of taking a trip to Europe for the weekend, always remembering to return home with gifts of Nina Ricci perfume and so forth. These adventures, at home and abroad, were often the subject of his thoughtful letters and Christmas cards, sent by the hundreds to his family, friends, and colleagues. Ralph was a true scholar, which was evident to all by his love of reading, encyclopedic knowledge of current world and business affairs. While all impressive traits, Ralph was perhaps best known for his quality of character: he was a true gentleman. He was remarkably kind and loving and will always be remembered for his sense of humour and generosity of spirit to all.
Ralph was a faithful member of both St Augustine’s and St. Bernard’s Catholic Churches.
Ralph was predeceased by his brothers Thomas (Helen), Harold (Matilda, Rita), Neil (Mary), Gerald (Elizabeth), infant Willis and his sisters Frances (Jim) Vautour and Eileen (Bill) Weir. He was the last member of his immediate family. He is survived by his nephews Roger (late Joan) Trites, Tom (Maureen) Trites, Robert(late Diane)Vautour and nieces Norah (John) Prior, Judy (Carl) Steeves, Lynda (Terry Theriault) Trites, Phyllis (Gary) Algee and Janet (Boyd) Algee. He was pre-deceased by his nephews Joe (late Carmel), Frank (late Marilyn), Peter (Debbie), and, niece, Susan (Dave Farrah) Trites. In addition, he is survived by many grand nieces and nephews.
Janet and Boyd are exceptionally grateful for the love, care and compassion shown daily to Ralphie and the support given to his family by Susan Dixson and her dedicated staff. Serenacare Briarlea made Ralphie’s last years enjoyable, taking the time to truly know and appreciate Ralphie. Arrangements are in the care of Passage Funeral Co-operative, Moncton, with details to be announced at a later date.
