Rita Fontaine
1919 ~ 2020
Moncton, NB – Rita Fontaine, 100, passed away peacefully at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre on Sunday, March 8th, 2020.
Born in Grande-Digue, NB, she was the daughter of the late Pierre and the late Elizabeth Gallant (born Hébert).
Rita Fontaine, native of Grand-Digue, was born in 1919 and began her teaching career in 1939 at the Grand-Digue’s schools. At the beginning of her career, Rita was teaching multiple levels in a single class. Some of her students were almost the same age as Rita.
In 1946, Rita moved to Moncton with her husband Hector Fontaine, where they raised six children. She continued her teaching career at the Verdun and Saint Henri schools, especially in her second year. She taught until 1979. Between raising her six children and teaching, Rita was quite busy.
Once she retired, Rita did not slow down. She also traveled, Hawaii, Alaska, and New York, bowling, knitted, and was a volunteer for hospitals. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rita lost her sight at the age of 90 but did not let this situation stop her from living a quality life. Thanks to her determination, Rita was still living in her own apartment and had kept her joy of life. What made her happy was hearing the voices of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed listening to audiobooks, chatting with her mini Google Home, eating a good meal and of course drinking a nice glass of wine in good company. She also spoke to her 102-year-old sister every day.
Rita will be dearly missed by three sons, Francis Fontaine (Nadine) of Niagara Falls, Robert Fontaine (Francine) of Moncton and Bernard Fontaine (Rachelle) of Fredericton; three daughters, Joanne Fontaine (John) of Moncton, Rachelle Purdy (Lloyd) of Grande-Digue, Lucille Fontaine (Léona Arsenault) of PEI; one sister, Léona McDermott of Dieppe; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey, Michael, Kevin, Vanessa, Nathalie, Renée, Erin, Marielle and Stéphane; thirteen great grand-children; also by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Hector; and three sisters, Lillianne, Dorina and Corinne.
In respect of Rita’s wishes, there will be no visitation. The Funeral service will be held at Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, in Moncton, on Saturday, March 14th, 2020, at 11am.
